Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure aimed at reducing the size and weight of excessively large breasts to achieve a more proportionate and balanced appearance.
Bigger breasts with downward pointing and > 1-2 cm inferiorly displaced nipples (ptosis), large asymmetric areolas
Functional symptoms: shoulder and neck pain, bra imprinting, fungal infections under the breasts and nipple insensitivity.
Psychological symptoms: difficulty exercising, bullying, shamefulness during intimacy, inability to dress according to taste.
The ideal breast criteria are followed to excise excess breast tissue and skin, reduce the areola, ascend the nipple to a more ideal position and shape the remaining breast.
As there are in most cases both breast and skin excess, skin incisions are inevitable. The standard incisions follow an inverted-T pattern (Weiss pattern).
Ironically, the Weiss pattern used to reduce breasts is inspired by the tissue pattern used in bra manufacturing.
Why do it?
Improvement in functional and psychological symptoms if present (general quality of life)
Increase in workout motivation
Improvement in nipple/areola sensitivity if there was an insensitivity pre-operatively
No statistically significant reduction in breastfeeding ability compared to general population
Due to hormonal changes, the breasts can re-enlarge. Refrain from gaining significant weight in order to maintain an optimal result.
