After Massive Weight Loss Surgery
Why are Massive Weight Loss (MWL) patients special?
1st Problem: After significant weight loss, the skin and soft tissues often lack the elasticity to shrink back to the body’s new contours. This results in excess, sagging skin in areas like the abdomen, thighs, arms, breasts, and back. This may significantly impact the patient's mobility, comfort, and quality of life.
2nd Problem: these patients often have nutritional deficiencies, especially if the patient had bariatric surgery (especially gastric bypass). Deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and protein can affect wound healing, increase the risk of infection, and slow recovery after surgery.
3rd Problem: Due to the extent of body changes, many patients require multiple surgeries over an extended period of time to achieve their desired results.
Why do it?
MWL patients often experience a complex relationship with their body image, even after achieving a healthy weight. While the physical transformation is significant, the presence of excess skin can sometimes be psychologically distressing, leading to feelings of unfinished transformation or dissatisfaction with their appearance.
