After Massive Weight Loss Surgery

What can be done?

The plastic surgeon plays a crucial role in helping restore the body’s appearance and function after significant weight loss and should be involved as soon as possible after surgery. Here's what we can do for after MWL surgery:

  • Excess skin removal (body contouring) in several areas such as:

    • Circumferential body lift (360 degrees) or Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck): Removes excess skin and fat from the back/buttocks and abdomen and tightens the underlying muscles.

    • Brachioplasty (arm lift): Removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms, improving contour and reducing skin sagging.

    • Medial Thigh Lift: Removes excess skin and fat from the inner or outer thighs, improving leg shape and reducing skin folds.

    • Panniculectomy: Removes the large fold of excess skin (pannus) hanging from the lower abdomen, which can cause discomfort or hygiene issues.

  • Mastopexy (breast lift): Lifts and reshapes the breasts, which often sag after weight loss. It can also include breast augmentation to restore volume or breast reduction to remove volume.

  • Liposuction can be used to remove any stubborn fat pockets that remain after significant weight loss, helping to further contour the body.

  • Facial Contouring with or without fat grafting

    • Face lift and/or Neck lift: If significant weight loss has caused sagging or excess skin in the face or neck, it can be combined with fat grafting to restore volume loss in the fat compartments of the face.

  • At least 12-18 months after the weight has stabilized (should be within 10% of ideal body weight)

    • Provide supplementation for protein, vitamins B12, D, calcium, zinc and iron.

    • Stop smoking at least 1 month before surgery

    • Workout to build muscle mass

    • Ensure that your overall health is stable. (diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea)

  • Psychologists can help patients mentally prepare for the physical and emotional challenges of body-contouring surgery, by managing expectations, understanding the realistic outcomes of surgery, and addressing any anxiety or fear about the procedure

The order of surgeries are as follows

    • Circumferential body lift first

    • If there less excess skin, an abdominoplasty can be done with a medial thigh lift

    • Brachioplasty and breast lift can be done next

    • Body touch ups and facial surgery are next.
